In this week’s fashion history, we will be taking a look at the fashion history of Valentino. Valentino is an Italian luxury fashion house founded in 1960 by Valentino Garavani. The fashion house deals in the sales of ready-to-wear and haute couture outfits, footwear, watches, and accessories.

Valentino Garavani born May 1932 is an Italian fashion designer best known as the founder of the Valentino SpA company.

Valentino studied fashion design from a young age and completed his training in Paris after which he moved to Rome to start his life in 1959. A few years later, he succeeded in becoming a favorite designer of the world best-dressed women. He is also popularly known for his use of red fabrics.
Valentino opened his fashion house in 1960 and met Giancarlo Giammetti an architectural student who quickly became Valentino’s partner. Together the pair developed Valentino SpA and the brand became internationally recognized.
The fashion house got its international debut at the Pitti Palace in Florence. In 1967, Valentino received the prestigious Neiman Marcus fashion award and his designs were considered the pinnacle of Italian couture. Valentino also in 1964 designed 6 black and white dresses for Jacqueline Kennedy which she wore during the year following the assassination of her husband.

In 1998, Garavani and Giammetti sold the company for approximately $300 million to HdP, an Italian conglomerate controlled, in part, by the late Gianni Agnelli, the head of Fiat. In 2008, Valentino retired after the presentation of his ready-to-wear Women collection in October. The fashion house’s current creative director is Pierpaolo Piccioli.
