In this week’s fashion history, we will be taking a look at the fashion history of Max Mara. Max Mara is an Italian luxury fashion house founded in 1951 in Reggio Emilia by Achille Maramotti. The fashion house deals in the sales of ready-to-wear outfits.

Fashion History: The history of Max Mara

Achille Maramotti was born in January 1927 in Reggio Emilia. He was born into a family that was passionate about haute couture. His grandmother Marina Rinaldi owned a luxury fashion house in the late nineteenth century and his mother taught sewing and also published books dedicated to the theory of cutting.

Achille Maramotti attended the cutting and Dressing school his mother Giulia Fontanesi launched and was fascinated with dressmaking. Achille was educated in Rome and received a law degree from the University of Parma. After his graduation, he returned to his passion for Haute couture and this was the beginning of his career.

Achille Maramotti had a desire to produce high-quality women’s clothing. In 1947, he started designing couture clothing and launched his business House of Max Mara in 1951. The Mara originated from his surname while the max referred to a local character who was seldom sober but always stylish. The first collection revealed by the house of Max Mara featured a camel coat and geranium red suit which started the fashion house’s distinctive style.

In 1954, the house of Max Mara had over 200 employees. The fashion house also employed Karl Lagerfeld, Dolce and Gabbana, and many more designers in different eras. The fashion house grew over the years and also launched its publication MM magazine in 1989.

Achille Maramotti died in 2005 and his two sons and daughter carried on the business.
