Metaverse: Focus Shifts to Metaverse, As Meta Updates its Bug Bounty Program

Meta announced on Friday that it is updating the payout guidelines for its bug bounty program for its Reality Labs hardware products as its focus shifts more towards the metaverse and virtual reality. With the update, Meta clarifies which fixes result in which rewards, and it specifically mentions that the Ray-Ban Stories glasses are also covered by the program.

This program’s covered devices, according to the updated payout guidelines, are Quest 2, Quest, Portal TV, Portal+, Portal Go, Portal Mini, Portal, and Ray-Ban Stories. The maximum bounty for each type of exploit is listed next to it; for example, finding a persistent full secure boot bypass could net you up to $30,000.

Meta will award the amount based on factors such as the impact of the exploit, the ease of exploitation, and the quality of the report. Furthermore, when determining the amount to award, it will take into account any issues you discover that could pose physical, safety, or privacy risks.

Finding exploits in hardware and reporting them to the parent company can sometimes land you in legal trouble, but with Meta’s bug bounty program, the devices it has specified can be investigated for bugs without legal ramifications if you do it to report it to Meta. Meta said that with the addition of Ray-Ban Stories and its companion app, Facebook View, you’ll enjoy safe harbor protections outlined in its terms of service for attempting to find bugs in this product.
