In Kelly Clarkson’s household, Christmas is not abandoned.

In actuality, the singer spends the holiday with her children, son Remington Alexander, 6, and daughter River Rose, 8, whom she has with her ex-husband Brandon Blackstock. She claimed that after seven years of marriage, the couple has decided to split the holidays, with the children spending Thanksgiving with Kelly and Christmas with Brandon.

She said to Jewel on The Kelly Clarkson Show on December 13 that “it’s not like my favorite holiday and it is for his family, so I was like cool.” It was strange because there had always been a child there and then all of a sudden there was just the two of you.

Although it required some getting used to, Kelly—who has primary physical custody and dual legal custody of her children—said she was able to make the most of it.

“It seems strange at first, but then you think, “OK. I am competent,” “She went on. “It’s kind of amazing. You do have some alone time.”

The answer came from Jewel, who also plans the holidays with her ex-husband Ty Murray: “It must be good practice for empty nest syndrome. Being away from her son Kase, 11, “forces me to invest,” she said, and recall the time she spent before becoming a mother, adding, “I suddenly appear to forget what I did.”
