The newly-installed Prime Minister emerged from the monarch’s Balmoral residence in Scotland after completing the power transfer, known as ‘kissing hands.’
Buckingham Palace issued a statement saying, ‘The Queen received in audience The Right Honourable Elizabeth Truss MP today and requested her to form a new administration.’ Ms Truss accepted Her Majesty’s offer and kissed Her Majesty’s hand after being appointed Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury.’
Mr. Boris Johnson, accompanied by his wife Carrie, left Balmoral shortly after his final 40-minute audience with the Queen. The monarch was ‘gracefully pleased’ to accept, according to a statement from Buckingham Palace.
Ms. Truss will have little time to celebrate because she must return to London to work out plans to reduce soaring energy bills.
She is expected to cap the average household bill at £2,500 per year, with costs offset further by keeping the £400 handout already committed. According to Mail Online, this would leave the level only slightly higher than the current cap of £1,900, and a thousand pounds below the figure set to be reached next month.
Around 4 p.m., Ms Truss will deliver her own speech on the steps of Downing Street.
The foreign secretary is the country’s third female leader, having received slightly more than 81,000 votes to Mr. Sunak’s slightly more than 60,000.
