Ming Ma Spring Summer 2023 Ready to Wear Collection were everything we expected and more as the event was kickstarted by a documentary on the highly influential Ballets Russses, the troupe with which Vaslav Nijinsky danced and from which Paul Poiret developed a dramatic palette that broke with the conventions of the 1910s.

Although done in his own unique way, Ma’s emphasis on dance and historical allusions is in line with worldwide trends that evolved over the spring season. Although there was a healthy dose of sweetness throughout, expressed via the use of lace and flowers, mini pouf dresses had bra detailing that were hotter than sweet.

Ma occasionally changed silhouettes by picking particular fabrics. A blue denim outfit was embellished with flower appliques cut from an embroidered tulle the designer designed with a mill in Italy; a white skirt with godets was unexpectedly fashioned of white denim. In another outfit, Ma toyed with the sheerness of the material by draped yards of it over a white crinoline.
