On Wednesday, February 8, 2023, Nicki Minaj made history after Billboard and Vibe jointly named her the greatest female rapper of all time.
The 40-year-old rapper started the year on a bright note after breaking Missy Elliot’s record of being the longest-charting female rapper on Billboard’s Hot 100.
Missy Elliot previously held the record for appearing on Billboard’s Hot 100 for 13 consecutive years, but Nicki reached her 14th consecutive year on the Billboard Hot 100 with her “Super Freaky Girl” song, which has been on the Billboard chart for over 20 weeks.
Since she hit the spotlight in 2004, there have always been debates about her being the greatest female artist that the rap game has seen.
The mother of one knows that rap music is male-dominated and is proud of what she is doing for women in the industry.
During her 2014 BET Awards acceptance speech, the “Anaconda’’ crooner said:
“I thank God that I’ve been placed in a position to do something and represent women in a culture that is so male-driven.”
The rapper who does incredible rap verses also ended the debate about who writes her verses:
“What I want the world to know about Nicki Minaj is, that when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it. No, no, no shade. No, no, no shade. I used to sit in the studio with Wayne and I would literally take sometimes three, four days to write a verse. And he was like, No, you can’t be taking days to write no verse, you gotta write your verse right here in the studio. And that’s why I love him till this day. Because he pushed me to push my pen, and I’m still one of the only emcees that’s out here spitting metaphors and making you think.’’
Talking about being accepted in the male-dominated industry, Nick Minaj said:
“I really don’t even care if I get my credit or if I don’t. I don’t look at myself as a female rapper, because I know what I do. And I thank my fans.’’
