Fashion History: The history of Bottega Veneta

In this week’s fashion history, we will be taking a look at the history of Bottega Veneta. Bottega Veneta is an Italian luxury fashion house that produces ready-to-wear, handbags, jewelry, accessories, shoes, and fragrances.

The fashion house was founded by Michele Taddei and Renzo Zengiaro in Vicenza, Veneto in 1966.

The fashion house originally started with crafting artisanal leather goods and in the process developed a distinctive leather weaving design, the Intrecciato which is one of the iconic looks of the fashion house.

During that time, Bottega was famous for its slogan “When your initials are enough”. Their designs can easily be linked to them and are easily recognizable.

In 1972, Bottega opened its first store in New York City, United States of America, and started making shoes in the mid-70s.

After Renzo Zengiaro left the company at the end of 1970, his co-founder Michele Taddei handed over the company to his ex-wife Laura Braggion. Laura and her second husband Vittorio Moltedo headed the company and moved to new york to develop the brand. The fashion house during the 1990s, Bottega Veneta launched its first ready-to-wear collection.

In 2001, Bottega was sold to the former Gucci group and the fashion house went through a rebirth. After the acquisition, Tomas Maier took over the design and returned to the brand’s early ideologies. Since then it had stayed consistent with its high fashion and luxury.

In June 2018, Daniel Lee took over as the creative director of Bottega and Still maintains the position.
