Folarin Falana, better known by his stage name Falz is a Nigerian rapper, actor, and songwriter. He began his career while in secondary school after forming a group called “The School Boys” with his friend before his professional career as a music artiste began in 2009. The ‘Soldier’ hit maker is also known for his eccentric sense of fashion often donning pieces that are a true reflection of his African heritage while also remaining incredibly savvy. I sat down with the chilled out Falz for a quick interview.

What’s the story behind your name?

Falz is just a nickname. It’s something I picked up while I was in school, while was growing up. It’s actually the short of my surname, Falana. The Bahd Guy is just a title I picked up. I think it’s related to the music and the sort of persona I had in my music which was sort of like a bad guy. But I try to make my bad guy have sort of like a positive connotation so I spell it in a different way which actually stands for Brilliant And Highly Distinct.

So why coke studio for you?

Coke studio is a great platform and experience. What they are trying to achieve is something that I’ve always stood for, that blend of culture, mix of different sounds.

Who do look forward to working with?

In Africa as a whole, maybe Diamond Platinumz, I think he’s a very electric performer but here in Kenya I’ve been able to meet Sauti Sol, Victoria Kimani so I would definitely like to work with them.

Describe your inspiration, both for music and fashion.

I think it’s very similar. What I go for is unique and peculiar. I go for stuff that might initially be weird but when you look at, is very stylish. I just try to bring contemporary stuff mixed with old school fashion and at the same time with my music I try to mix different genres and I try to be peculiar with my sound. My style is not vintage though, it’s alike a mix of old school and new school.

What’s the inspiration behind the hit song ‘Soldier’?

What I was to do is make the story of  a soldier that’s trying to talk to a lady and trying to get her to love him but the approach is very aggressive and sort of commanding. What’s interesting is that the original theme of the song is not really about just the soldier but about anyone who has a very aggressive or demanding approach and letting them know that’s not necessarily attractive. You may be rich and powerful but ladies don’t necessarily like that.

Must have fashion item.

My glasses.
