Omoyele Sowore, better known as Yele Sowore, is a Nigerian human rights campaigner who was born in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria on February 16, 1971. Omoyele Sowore, who is from Ese-Odo in Ondo State in Nigeria’s south-western region, is 50 years old and celebrates his birthday on February 16th.
Sowore hailed from a polygamous household with sixteen children, and because he wasn’t given much care as a child, he learnt to ride a motorcycle at the tender age of 12 years old, which he now uses to feed his family before heading to school.
During Nigeria’s military administration, he developed a strong interest in the media.
Education
Omoyele Sowore began his schooling at a young age, attending basic primary school before moving on to secondary school. Sowore continued his study in a higher institution, the University of Lagos (UNILAG), where he studied Geography and Planning and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree between 1989 and 1995.
He began his political career and activism as an undergraduate, which led to him being expelled twice before graduating from the university. During his time in school, he was the Student Union President and was involved in numerous student protests.

In 1989, he was at the center of a protest against the government over a $120 million loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to be used for oil pipelines in Nigeria, with a stipulation that the loan be used to cut the number of universities in Nigeria from 28 to 5.
Sowore also led a rally of over 5,000 students against the government in 1992, which resulted in the deaths of seven protesters when police opened fire on nonviolent protesters. On June 12, 1993, he was also in a demonstration for democratic rule.
Due to his obstinacy, the government has attempted to silence him in many ways; he has been beaten, jailed, and brutalized for the cause he believed in. Olajide Sowore, his younger brother, was killed by Fulani herders in Edo State in 2021, in what was seen as a plan to silence the #RevolutionNow convener.
