The former Barcelona defender has also stated that he is unconcerned about his public image.

Since their split last year, the 36-year-old and his new girlfriend Clara Chia, 23, have been the target of his ex’s barbs in diss songs released by the Colombian beauty.

Shakira slammed the new couple in an earlier this year hit song with Argentinian DJ Bizarrap, comparing her to a Rolex and Clara Chia to a Casio in a series of scathing jabs.

She performed the song on Jimmy Fallon’s late-night show just over a week ago before discussing her split from Pique, raising eyebrows by revealing her two children with the retired footballer were in the studio audience.

In a new interview over the weekend, the former Spain international shut down a question about Shakira for the second time in less than a week, saying he wasn’t going to talk about it because “he didn’t feel like it.”

‘Each parent has the responsibility to try to do the best for their children,’ he told the Spanish newspaper El Pais.

‘It’s about safeguarding them. That is the responsibility of all parents toward their children. That is what I am focused on, and it is my responsibility as a father.’

Insisting he was doing “what he wanted”, he added: ‘The day I die, I will look behind me and I hope to have done everything I wanted.

‘I want to be honest with myself. I’m not going to spend money to improve my image.

‘The people I care about and love are those who know who I am. The rest is irrelevant to me. I focus my energy on being with my people and sharing what I have. I am overjoyed.

‘Things have changed in my life, and I’ve learned how to maintain my happiness.’

According to Marca.com, Pique was recently asked on a Spanish radio show if he had heard his ex Shakira’s famous song about their bitter breakup.

The footballer was on RAC1 when he was asked about Shakira’s No.1 TQG, which includes scathing lyrics about her ex and his new girlfriend.

‘Yes, obviously,’ the ex-Barcelona player replied, before adding: ‘I don’t want to talk about it’.

‘We have a responsibility, those of us who are parents must protect our children,’ he continued, referring to the two children he shares with Shakira. Everyone makes their own choices. I’m not feeling like talking right now. I just want my kids to be okay.’

‘I’ve always had a close bond with my children. Nothing makes me happier than to see my son smile.’

‘Each person makes the decisions he believes are best. I do things in a certain way, and I try to do them as well as possible. I’m fine and content.’

Shakira looks breathtaking in Burberry’s new holiday campaign.
