It has become a regular occurrence in the Nigerian entertainment industry for a celebrity marriage to crash in a year, the latest being that of Ayomide Richard Makun better known as Ay Makun and his wife Mabel.
In previous years, there have been rumours about strings of marital crises between Ay Makun and His wife, Mabel. These rumours were shut down following the birth of their second child, Ayomide after thirteen years.
In August 2023, the estranged couple’s mansion was razed down by fire while they were on vacation overseas.
On the 29th of November 2023, AY and Mabel celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary and 20 years of knowing each other. Shortly after their celebration, the news of another marital crisis hit the street of social media. This time, Mabel began dropping cryptic posts on her Instagram page which fueled the rumours. She also didn’t promote her husband’s latest movie then, ‘Merry Men 3’.
In her posts, the mother of two lamented about being mentally abused and a threat to her life. Following this, Mabel moved out of the apartment she shared with AY (at the time, the mansion was razed down by fire and was under renovation). To make matters worse, they unfollowed each other on Instagram.
While all this was on, AY went about his usual business like nothing happened. He however got trapped in the rumours making rounds about his marital crisis after he celebrated his nephew’s 17th birthday on his Instagram page with a complicated caption. Many were quick to react as they concluded that the said nephew identified as ‘Denzel’ is his son.
A few weeks later, AY dropped another hint at his marital crisis after he celebrated Mabel as the mother of his kids and not as his wife. This interestingly gave bloggers like GistLover and Cutie Jules more energy to spill what they know.
According to these bloggers, Mabel who is an interior decorator was using her money to finance their home after the mansion fire to ease her husband’s stress however, he was busy cheating. They claimed that Ay was busy cheating on his wife with female celebrities – Ebube Nwagbo, Big Brother Naija former housemate, Aneekaah, Juliet Ibrahim, Lilian Esoro, and Lilian Afegbai.
On Saturday, 7th April, Ay officially confirmed the end of his union with Mabel. In a lengthy Instagram, he admonished the public not to assume that being loud is strong and being quiet is weak. He admitted that he found himself doing some things that he isn’t proud of today and it is sad to see his friendship and marriage of 20 years slip off his hands.
Not wanting to take the blame, he noted that neither he nor his wife are guilt-free in the collapse of their union. Interestingly, Mabel reacted to Ay’s post, she noted that hat distancing herself is her way of reacting to disrespect. She emphasized that she refuses to engage in any drama.
Oh well, according to Gistlover, Mabel has a younger boo whom she has been seeking solace with. This angered Ay as he could not take what he had dished out. Hence the reason why he stated in his post that his wife has a fair share of the blame.
On 10th April, Mabel also took to her official Instagram page to confirm the end of her marriage. She stated that her dreams of a lifelong marriage have taken a different direction however, she is committed to moving forward with grace and resilience. While pleading with the public to grant them privacy to navigate this phase, she noted that bloggers are peddling false narratives about the crash of the union but she chooses not to comment out of honour for her children.
Reacting, Ay who has used his 16-year-old daughter, Michelle to taunt his wife as the benefit he has obtained from the marriage simply stated “This too shall pass”.
Judging from the series of events that transpired and made known to the public, the marriage of Ay and his wife, Mabel Makun broke because of infidelity.
It is worth noting that we can only come to this conclusion based on what has been put out on social media. The couple who many admire have joined the long list of celebrities who have dissolved their union.
