YEMI ALADE, LAYOLE OYATOGUN AND MEG OTANWA TELL US ABOUT ASO EBI

Aso Ebi in occasions is not just a Nigerian culture but is practiced in other African countries. It simply means a uniformed fabric clothing material that people wear at an event. When a good material is used for Aso Ebi, the occasion can become colorful as close friends and families swarm the environment in array of beautiful colours and different styles.

However Aso Ebi can sometimes be a klind of pain by reason of cost and deadline to purchase. Sometimes a person might not be budgeting buying or making clothes for the mean time but because of his or her relationship with the celebrants it would become an obligation and often times celebrants bring these fabrics to ther buyer in short notice hence the urgency to go to the tailors and make the attire. Also sometimes it might be too expensive.

Yemi Alade, Meg Otanwa and Layole Oyatogun spoke with Glamsquad on what they feel about the Asoebi culture regarding its relevance, how much the most expensive Aso Ebi they have bought cost, and what they think would be too much to pay for it.

Layole Oyatogun said; “I totally love the Aso Ebi culture, the Aso Ebi culture has grown tremendously  and it has come to stay, it’s really amazing to see friends and family get really creative with the same fabric, Although Eso Ebi used to be a means of identification of family members at an occasion it has evolved.

Aso Ebi is an integral part of our culture, It’s relevance cannot be over emphasised! We are in an era where some cultural practices are declining and some are becoming extinct, but the Aso Ebi culture to my delight is experiencing increased acceptance and popularity
Aso Ebi  has become a means for the display of cultural identity and solidarity amongst families and friends.

The highest price I have had to pay for Aso ebi is 50,000, that’s the only issue I have with asoebi, it cannot be recycled for another wedding? Everyone comes with a new fabric for their occasion, it is indeed capital! Lol

I have heard people pay as high as 250,000 for Aso ebi for a society wedding! I think that’s ridiculous for a fabric that cannot be worn for another Occassion well except thanksgiving Sunday in Church, I think any amount that is above a 100,000 is way too much!”

Meg Otanwa “Aso-ebi is a yoruba term that means “family cloth”. It is the distinctive clothing worn by family members,  friends or groups of people at events such as weddings, naming ceremony, burial etc.

well Aso-ebi has become a culture in our society. It is used to distinguishing different groups at events and  it does make events look colourful.

N45,000 is the highest I have paid.

The reasonable price is very much dependent on an individual’s financial strength really.  There are people who will buy Aso-ebi for N200,000 without flinching.  While for others, N20k might be on the high side.”

Yemi Alade “I am fine as long as the celebrants don’t make the Aso Ebi mandatory or a must.

I think the relevance of Aso Ebi would be for uniformity sake and to sort of indirectly support the celebrant as the cash from the sales of Aso Ebi can be used to cushion other expenses.

It’s not on purpose, I promise, but I have never bought any Aso ebi. I have barely attended 3 weddings in my life time.

I think anything above 30 to 50k would be a bit too expensive.”
