With her masterful understanding of fabric manipulation and architectural silhouettes, she creates garments that are simultaneously avant-garde and wearable. Baumeister’s use of unconventional materials and experimental techniques not only showcases her creative prowess but also challenges the industry to reconsider its conventional notions of beauty and aesthetics.

This year’s runner-ups are Henry Zankov of Zankov and Diotima’s Rachel Scott, who will each be awarded $100,000 and provided with a mentorship. Zankov, a Russian-born, American designer based in New York, launched his label in 2020 after stints at Donna Karan, Diane von Furstenberg, and others. He is known for his idiosyncratic take on knitwear, which oftentimes features bold graphics and vibrant colors. Scott hails from Jamaica, where she makes the unique crochet pieces that have become her signature. Launched in 2021, Diotima presents a nuanced and contemporary vision of Caribbean style, and has been worn by the likes of Doja Cat, Gabrielle Union, and Keke Palmer. “The CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund has always supported truly creative talent…it has been a way for the world to see new and unique stories,” said the CFDA chairman Thom Browne. “Congratulations to Melitta Baumeister as well as Henry Zankov and Rachel Scott… and all finalists doing truly individual and creative work.”
