Rei Kawakubo, still inventive after 50 years; and Japanese designer Satoshi Kondo’s youthful energy.

With my head still filled with the extraordinary costumes the designer had assembled in Vienna for Orlando, it was difficult not to wonder how Rei Kawakubo felt about following that with yet another show.

Her determination not to present normality on stage – although this show was, in fact, a rambling walk through the seated audience – made it difficult to imagine how these peculiar objects could even be considered clothing; the white ring like a swimming support or the grey dress with bendable black object on top.

The designer has had 50 years of experience in turning a gesture into a garment.
