The amount is the highest ever paid for a piece of sports clothing, surpassing the $9.28 million paid for Diego Maradona’s shirt during the “Hand of God” game against England in the 1986 World Cup.
This isn’t the first time a piece of Jordan memorabilia has gone for a hefty sum. Jordan’s autographed player card was sold in October 2021 for $2.7 million. The record price paid for any sports-related item was $12.6 million.

Jordan wore the Sotheby’s-auctioned jersey in Game 1 of the series in which he won his sixth and final NBA championship with the Chicago Bulls.
“The season itself is his’magnum opus’ as an athlete, and a testament to him as a champion and competitor,” Sotheby’s head of streetwear and modern collectibles, Brahm Wachter, said on Thursday, September 15.
“Jordan finals jerseys are remarkably scarce, and the [1998] finals are arguably the most coveted of them all.”
Wachter stated that there was a lot of interest in the jersey.
“There’s been palpable excitement from not only sports fans, but collectors alike who want to own a rare piece of history in the weeks since we announced the auction,” Wachter said.
“[The] astounding 20 bids solidify Michael Jordan as the undisputed GOAT, proving his name and incomparable legacy is just as relevant today as it was nearly 25 years ago.”
