Vincent is the son of John A Viola, an Italian immigrant, and his wife Virginia. His father was a truck driver who later joined the United States Army and served in the European theater of World War II, an experience that had a profound impact on young Vincent. He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School and was sent to the United States Military Academy, where he graduated and was named second lieutenant in the United States Army.

Thereafter, he attended Basic Infantry Officer Course and Ranger School before joining the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, where he spent the next few years. He earned a JD from the New York Law School after leaving the service, but failed the bar exam.

In the early 1980s, he began his business career, amassing $10,000 to buy a spot on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Vincent’s role at NYMEX grew over time, and he became vice president in 1993, a position he held until 1996. Then, five years later, he was elected president of the organization, a position he held until 2004, further increasing his wealth. He is currently Executive President of Virtu Financial. Based in New York, Virtu was founded by Viola. Virtu Financial is a market maker and liquidity provider in financial markets around the world.

Through its technology platform, it provides quotes to buyers and sellers of stocks, commodities, currencies, options, fixed income and other securities across multiple exchanges, markets and money pools. Shortly after September 11, 2001, Viola was instrumental in founding the Center for Counterterrorism at West Point. Vincent and his wife Teresa are full time investors. They own the St. Elias and Teresa Viola Racing teams.
