Is Wizkid the first African artist to earn the BRIT Billion award?

Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun (aka Wizkid) is a Nigerian singer/songwriter who has collaborated with Drake, Skepta, and Chris Brown, among others. In 2011, he achieved regional success with the enormously popular hit “Holla at Your Boy,” which came on his debut album, Superstar.

Wizkid went worldwide in 2016 when his collaboration with Drake, “One Dance,” reached number one in 15 countries, landing him a multi-album deal with RCA, which released his Caribbean-influenced major-label debut, Sounds from the Other Side, in 2017. In 2021, the critically acclaimed Made in Lagos was released, containing the globally charting hit single “Essence.” Wizkid’s fifth album, More Love, Less Ego, was released just one year later.

Fast forward to recent achievement, Wizkid becomes the first African artist to earn the BRIT Billion award for over 1 billion streams in the UK 🤯
