Naomi Osaka, the former world number one and four-time major champion, has announced that she is pregnant and will miss the 2023 tennis season, glamsquad reports.
Osaka has withdrawn from the upcoming Australian Open, which she has won twice.
Osaka has not played a full match since losing in the first round of the US Open, and she will compete in only 11 tournaments in 2022.
She also told reporters that the sport no longer brought her joy after a third-round exit at the 2021 US Open.
Osaka announced her pregnancy on Twitter on Wednesday, along with a photo of an ultrasound.
“I realize that life is so short, and I don’t take any moments for granted; every day is a new blessing and adventure.
“I know I have a lot to look forward to in the future. “One thing I’m looking forward to is my child seeing one of my matches and saying, ‘that’s my mom,’ haha,” she wrote.
