Coronation Day has arrived in London. King Charles III and his wife, Queen Camilla, were both formally crowned Saturday at Westminster Abbey in London. The coronation ritual, rooted in centuries of history but with a few modern-day twists, was taking place in front of some 2,000 invited guests and a global audience of millions watching on TV or livestream, glamsquad reports

Though Charles technically became king on September 8, 2022, with the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, today’s coronation ceremony consecrates and commemorates his ascension.

Return of King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Buckingham Palace
Following their solemn coronation ceremony, King Charles III and Queen Camilla were leaving Westminster Abbey for the “King’s Procession” back to Buckingham Palace.
The royal couple will take the same path they did hours earlier on their trip to the abbey, but in a different coach.

They traveled to the ceremony on the Diamond Jubilee State Coach, which is only a few years old and features modern amenities such as hydraulic suspension and air conditioning. They will, however, return in the Gold Gold State Coach, which is almost 200 years old.
Because it lacks the modern conveniences of the other state carriage, the late Queen Elizabeth II famously described riding in it as a “horrible” experience.
