Singer, Rema achieves another major leap with ‘Calm Down’

Divine Ikubor, better known as Rema, a sensational Nigerian singer, has achieved another milestone as his hit song ‘Calm Down’ becomes the most streamed African song in the history of the United States of America, USA.

‘Calm Down’ beat CKay’s ‘Love Nwantiti’ to the top spot.

Chart Data, an American music data compilation website, announced this on Friday.

According to the statistics firm, “@heisrema’s ‘Calm Down’ is now the #1 most streamed Afrobeats song in US history, surpassing @ckay_yo’s ‘love nwantiti’.”

On Spotify and YouTube, both versions of the song have received over 500 million streams.

Recall that after a remix with American superstar Selena Gomez, ‘Calm Down’ became the highest-peaking Nigerian song on the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number three.

The song is also the first African song to reach number one on the American radio chart.

Meanwhile, Nigerian musicians Burna Boy and Ayra Starr have songs on former US President Barack Obama’s 2023 summer playlist.

On Thursday night, the 44th President of the United States announced the list via his Twitter account.

“‘Sittin’ On Top Of The World,’ by Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy, featuring US-based British rapper 21 Savage, and Ayra Starr’s ‘Sability’ were the only afrobeats songs on the playlist.”

Obama tweeted about the playlist, saying, “Like I do every year, here are some songs I’ve been listening to this summer — a mix of old and new.” “I’m excited to hear what I’ve missed.”

Wizkid, Tems, and Rema have previously appeared on President Obama’s playlists.

Rema’s debut EP’s ‘Iron Man’ made the 2019 Obama’s summer playlist, while Wizkid and Tems’ hit song ‘Essence’ made the 2021 Barack Obama’s summer playlist.
