‘Fela’s numerous wives, concubines almost killed him with stress’ – Seun Kuti

Seun Kuti, an afrobeat singer, has said that his late father, Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s multiple wives and concubines nearly killed him due to stress.

Kuti said that, in addition to the 27 wives the Afrobeats doyen married on the same day and his other spouses prior to the contentious marriage, he had over 100 concubines living with him in his Kalakuta commune.

He revealed that the stress of dealing with all the women overpowered Fela. On the ‘Bahd & Boujee’ podcast, Kuti stated, “People only know of Fela’s 27 wives; they don’t know of his over 100 girlfriends who lived with us in the house.”

“The wives and girlfriends almost killed Fela with stress.” Fela died from AIDS-related complications on August 2, 1997, at the age of 58.
