INTERVIEW: Why Nollywood veterans are not well taken care of – Jude Chukwuka

Jude Chukwuka, an actor and filmmaker, has stated that veterans are not well cared for in the entertainment industry since there are no mechanisms in place to ensure that.

In an interview with Saturday Beats obtained by Glam, he said,

“It is true that the younger generation is more prominent, but that is representative of what Nigeria is. The pensioners that laboured for this country in government have not been paid their benefits, so you don’t expect the entertainment industry to be different. The film industry does not operate in isolation. Once one is out the system, one is considered you irrelevant, and things are done without consulting one.

“The reasons for this include the fact there are no standards in the industry. In more developed countries, entertainers can live on royalties for the rest of their lives. But, there is nothing like that in Nigeria.”

Sharing his thoughts on Hannatu Musawa, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Culture and Entertainment Economy, he said,

“I appreciate that the government has recognised that the entertainment and cultural sector can actually be groomed to contribute to the economy. However, I do not agree with appointing Musawa to spearhead this. I read through her CV and I know she is well read but her forte is in oil and gas. She has nothing to do with entertainment and culture. It is a slap on the faces of the people in the entertainment industry that the president cannot find one of them to advise him on how the industry they have operated in can grow.”

Speaking on how marriage has impacted his career, he said,

“It has positively influenced me. Knowing that one has a wife that is independent and is capable of taking the right decisions gives one the liberty and peace of mind to be the best one can be when working. I work as much as possible, and I am glad that she is in my life. I am proud of what she has been doing.”
