Ariana Grande references early 2000 rom com movies in Thank You Next video

After days of teasing behind-the-scenes clips and photos on Instagram, the full music video for Ariana Grande’s breakup single which has been on repeat since its initial release “Thank U, Next” finally arrived just in time for Christmas as an early gift,  on November 30th. The highly anticipated tune had lyrics that name-check her exes and she hinted that the video would reference early-2000s rom-com classics.

The video opened up with a reference to the movie,  Mean Girls,  starting with rumours about Ariana just as the actual movie introduced Regina George starring some of the casts from the movie as well as singer Troye Sivan. Ariana Grande portrayed Regina George with her very own burn book which was titled thank you next but it wasn’t a hateful book as the movie but rather a tribute to her high profile exes.  It showed us the plastics strutting through the hallway and the legendary Winter performance on stage with Kris Jenner portraying the “Cool Mum.”

Another movie referenced was, Bring It On,  the hit cheerleader movie playing the character acted by Kristen Dust.  Focusing on the scenes of the cheer leading battle and the flirty bathroom scene as well as the tape scene from the movie but Ariana indicated in the video that the tape was from Ari to Ari because the song was for her.

Followed by all pink loving diva,  Legally Blonde. Ariana Grande portrayed the Harvard student played by Reese Weetherspoon. She also had a cast from the movie in her video to reenact a scene.

Then the final reference was 13 Going on 30 starring Jennifer Garner with the dollhouse scene.

I must say she did a great job releasing an iconic video to backup an iconic track.
