WHAT ARE CERAMIDES?

In an interview with  Vice President, R&D, Elizabeth Arden Art Pellegrino gave a detailed explanation of what Ceramide Technology is and its  functions for different skin types.

Ceramides are naturally occurring lipids produced by your skin that comprise 50% of the skin’s barrier layer. Ceramides help support the skin’s barrier layer for moisture retention and help hold healthy cells together, leaving skin with a hydrated, smooth, and healthy look.

Why do I need ceramides?

Ceramides play a key role in maintaining both skin’s moisture level and firmness by helping to create a moisture barrier within the skin (similar to the mortar found between bricks in a wall). They are critical in maintaining the skin’s defense against the signs of aging. As we age, our skin no longer produces enough ceramides to keep skin nourished on its own.

Why does the skin lose ceramides?

As we age, our cell turnover rate slows down and we produce less ceramides. As a result, skin becomes thinner and the moisture barrier function is diminished. With a weaker barrier, the skin is more susceptible to moisture loss and environmental damage. This causes the skin to look dry and dull, and lines and wrinkles become more visible.

At what age do ceramide levels start to decline?

While the effects are different for every woman, as we age, levels of lipids, nutrients and estrogen diminish. Skin experiences a loss of collagen, elastin and proteins. Decreased mineral absorption means skin may not be getting the necessary micro-nutrients it needs. As a result, many women find that skin feels dry and tight and moisturizers that do not contain anti-aging benefits are no longer effective on their own. You may notice lines and wrinkles, blotchiness and dark spots and your skin loses firmness or becomes more fragile and sensitive. As a result, skin looks dull as it loses its natural radiance.
