With every new season, Game of Thrones viewers can always count on new characters getting thrown into the mix. But just as often as new characters are introduced, major and minor ones alike meet grim fates. Though no one is truly safe in the Seven Kingdoms, some have fared much better than others. Still, with such a huge ensemble cast, it can be hard to keep up with the show’s ever-changing mortality rates. To help you out, here’s a handy guide to major characters who’ve been with us from the start and are still alive.

1 Tyrion Lannister

Saying Tyrion has been through a lot would be an understatement. He gets his face slashed during the Battle of the Blackwater, kills his lover and his father, almost drowns at the hands of greyscale-infected Stone Men, and is present when the Sons of the Harpy execute a huge surprise attack on Daenerys Targaryen in a Meereenese fighting pit — but he’s managed to survive all of those extreme events. He’s now sailing back to Westeros with Daenerys and using his political prowess to serve as her Hand of the Queen.

2 Daenerys Targaryen

Daenerys has several brushes with death throughout the series. She survives an assassination ordered by Robert Baratheon, flees another led by the Sons of the Harpy, and, like the Mother of Dragons she is, escapes not one, but two fires practically unscathed. Heading into the final episode of the series, Dany is burning everything down in her path on her quest for the Iron Throne.

3 Jon Snow

After previously risking his life in epic battles at Castle Black and Hardhome, season five of Game of Thrones ends with a few Night’s Watch brothers fatally stabbing Jon and leaving him to die. He doesn’t just almost die; he straight up, for real, dies. In a show full of cliffhangers, it was one of the biggest of all time. The twist had viewers waiting with bated breath to see how he would come back — because Jon Snow can’t really die, right? Thankfully, Melisandre revives him with her magic. He’s still alive and kicking heading into the end of Game of Thrones as we know it, but it remains to be seen if that will stick.

4 Sansa Stark

Sansa is thrown into not one, but two awful relationships with horrific people; she is first betrothed to Joffrey Baratheon, then married to Ramsay Bolton. She rightfully fears for her safety both times, but she comes out of the experiences stronger, more mature, and willing to fight when necessary. The evidence? She sends Ramsay’s own hungry, flesh-eating dogs after him. Now back in a Stark-controlled Winterfell, she’s ready to defend her home.

5 Bran Stark

In the very first episode of Game of Thrones, Jaime Lannister pushes Bran out of a window after the boy catches wind of his incestuous relationship with Cersei. Bran doesn’t die, though he’s left comatose and crippled. Over the course of the show, it’s revealed that Bran has the powers of greensight and warging, and he eventually becomes the new Three-Eyed Raven. Though not dead yet, he has a few perilous encounters with White Walkers, including one that leaves Hodor with an unfortunate fate.

6 Arya Stark

Arya spends a lot of time exploring death — though she’s often the one doing the killing. After fleeing King’s Landing and donning a disguise for safety, she meets Jaqen H’ghar and eventually trains to become a Faceless Man like him. She proves that she’s not much for following rules, causing the Waif to stab her and pursue her in a deadly chase. But like her sword fighting teacher, Syrio Forel, taught her to say to death: “not today.” Still alive, Arya has a long list of names she’d like to get revenge on and is slowly but surely making her way through it.

7 Samwell Tarly

Given his distaste for fighting and violence, it’s really quite amazing that Sam is still alive. As a member of the Night’s Watch and Jon Snow’s friend, he finds himself in many dangerous situations. Most notably, he hides behind a rock while caught in a stampede of White Walkers and even comes face to face with the terrifying Night King. He also encounters a White Walker after fleeing Craster’s Keep with Gilly and actually kills it with a dragonglass dagger.

8 Brienne of Tarth

Brienne first serves as Renly Baratheon’s Kingsguard, then swears fealty to Catelyn Stark after Renly dies. Under Cat’s orders, she tries to smuggle Jaime Lannister into King’s Landing to ensure the safety of the Stark daughters. Her promises puts her in occasional danger, such as when she’s thrown into a pit with a bear and nothing but a wooden sword as a weapon and when she gets into an intense brawl with The Hound. However, she’s survived them all and has now sworn to protect the surviving Starks.

9 Davos Seaworth

Davos is initially Stannis Baratheon’s Hand of the King, a position which gets him into deadly situations like being present in the midst of a wildfire explosion at the Battle of the Blackwater. He’s also not here for Stannis’s ally, Melisandre, and her blood magic, causing Stannis to call for his execution at one point. Melisandre, however, notes that her god, R’hllor, has chosen Davos for a higher purpose, and thus he’s still alive.

10 Bronn

The lecherous Bronn spends much of the series fighting for Tyrion and acting as his confidante. Later, he accompanies Jaime on a mission to bring Myrcella Baratheon back from Dorne, where they encounter the Sand Snakes and are jailed. He almost dies from a poison Tyene Sand used on him during their fight, but she gives him the antidote after he calls her the most beautiful woman in the world, at her request. He later helps Jaime keep Riverrun a Frey territory and is shocked to return to the burning Sept in King’s Landing.
