Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen has been as been crowned the 2023 African Footballer of the Year at the 2023 CAF Award held in Morocco.
The Napoli striker clinched the award on Monday, 11th December, beating out competitors including Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi and Egyptian forward, Mohamed Salah.
It is worth noting that Osimhen’s victory has put an end to Nigeria’s 24-year-long anticipation for Africa’s premier individual accolade. The last Nigerian to achieve this feat was the legendary Kanu Nwankwo in 1999.
The Nigerian international netted 26 goals in 32 appearances, securing the position of the League’s leading scorer and contributing to Napoli’s first Serie A title in 33 years.
Napoli also achieved their best result in the Champions League last season, reaching the quarterfinals in Europe’s premier competition.
Osimhen scored five goals in six Champions League matches last season. His individual accomplishments, coupled with Napoli’s performance, have secured the 24-year-old a place in this year’s Ballon d’Or top 10.
Glamsquad recalls that six days ago, Osimhen was crowned the Italian Footballers’ Association (AIC) Footballer of the Year.
