Thom Mrozek, the court’s Director of Media Relations, confirmed this on Friday, August 26, in response to an email inquiry from newsmen.

The sentencing was originally scheduled for February 14, but it was pushed back to July 11 before being rescheduled for September 21 this year.

When asked when Hushpuppi would be sentenced, Mrozek replied that the suspect had long pleaded guilty last year and would be sentenced later this year.

“Mr. Abbas is currently scheduled to be sentenced on September 21 by a federal judge in Los Angeles,” he said.

Hushpuppi, 39, was arrested in June 2020 in Dubai, United Arab Emirate (UAE) alongside 12 others on allegations of hacking, impersonation, scamming, banking fraud, and identity theft and was extradited to the United States for prosecution.

His extradition to the US came after the UAE police detailed his arrest in a special operation dubbed “Fox Hunt 2,” in which he was accused of defrauding 1.9 million victims to the tune of N168 billion.

In July 2021, he pleaded guilty to the charges and was ordered to remain in custody pending sentencing.

According to court documents, he faces 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $500,000 fine or “twice the gross gain or gross loss resulting from the offense.”

Meanwhile, Mrozek remained silent on the possible extradition of the suspended Head of Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team, DCP Abba Kyari, who was indicted in the Hushpuppi case by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Over a year ago, the court directed the FBI to arrest Kyari.

“I am unable to comment on Mr. Kyari’s condition,” the court official added.
