1. Investigate the Label’s Reputation

Make an effort to learn everything you can about the people behind the label that wants to sign you.

Are they legally operating? Do they have a track record of screwing their artists? Is the label’s CEO a divisive figure like Death Row’s Suge Knight?

You wouldn’t want to go down with your label executives if they were caught doing shady business, believe me!

2. Maintain some creative freedom

One of the main reasons a record label would want to sign you in the first place is your raw talent. They may, however, decide to repackage you and change your musical direction.

While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it’s a good idea to keep some creative control so you can flow naturally with the musical styles suggested by the label.

3. Rework the original contract

If your label makes an initial offer of 20%, it means there’s a chance they’ll increase it to 40% if you ask for it.

Always ask for more because if they truly want you, they won’t mind adding a little more to their initial offer.

4. Consult a lawyer

Your contract will be filled with jargon and jargon that you may not understand.

But who would do it? Your attorney!

Never sign a contract without first having a lawyer review it and advise you.

You should also avoid using the label’s lawyer. Hire one of yours!

5. Get ready for the contract’s end.

Every contract can be terminated, which is why you must understand the contract termination terms before signing.

What if a member of your band decides to go solo, or if another label offers you a better deal later on?
