Although Dossena had never met him (the company had been sold to Puig many years before), he had already considered how to honor him—and not just by displaying his original work. Dossena’s inspiration was to honor Rabanne’s friendship with Salvador Dali—two Spaniards who had a lot of sensational fun together with performance and film in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

He contacted the Gala-Dali Foundation and was granted permission to use five of the artist’s arch-Surrealist paintings as well as two spectacular pieces of Dali’s jewelry—a large gold bleeding heart dripping with ruby stones, and a metal ‘barbed wire’ necklace and belt.

His research manifested conceptually as “Chasing Dreams,” a trip into the subconscious in which fabrics became fuzzy and knitwear went a little crazy, glittering up ordinary-looking coats, sweaters, and trousers. This was only the beginning of a large collection of long red-carpet gowns. He approached the Dali paintings “as if we were slashing into the canvases,” deconstructing bodices and reattaching them with metal grommets.
