The Fashion Business Series Began Earlier Today

The “Fashion Business series” kicked off earlier today at the Metropolitan club Kofo Abayomi street, Ikoyi Lagos. The fashion business week is a three day conference on the clothing industry put together by Style House Files in collaboration with media partners and Fashion stakeholders. This year’s event gathered speakers from Nigeria and other countries from around the world that are making waves in the fashion Industry namely Omoyemi Akinrele (Host and Founder Style House Files), Simone Cipriani of Ethical Fashion Initiative, David Wej, Noble Igwe, Lisa Folawiyo, Mai Atafo amongst many others.  Also,  prestigious designers and stakeholders in the garment Industry where in attendance.

The venue was filled beyond capacity with professionals from the Fashion Industry.  Majority of the crowd seemed to be from mid-forties to early twenties. As expected, the crowd was a spectacle to behold as most of the audience where well adorned to display their crafts.

Keynote speech was given by Mr Simone Cipriani of Ethical Fashion Initiative. He spoke passionately about the possibility of us Africans exporting Fashion to the rest of the world. Leveraging from his experience in exporting fashion materials he hinted at ways we can utilize the capabilities we have and export to Major fashion labels in Europe and all over the world. With a slideshow presentation he showed the audience major designer labels finished products with cotton they had imported from Burkina Faso in Africa. He rounded off to a loud ovation.

Then there were several panels of discussions with dealt with topics like mass production, pricing, profitability and risks. David Wej a known clothier and retailer of fashion, Nnani Odichie the VP of Konga amongst others also discussed about retail and E commerce opportunities and practices that work. Mai Atafo, Noble Igwe amongst others held panels of discussions where they welcomed questions from the audience.

The day closed with a debate moderated by Keturah King of CNN between Ozinna Anumudu of shop Maju vs Lisa Folawiyo on Luxury vs  Mass Fashion Market. This was the first day of the seminar which started off interestingly. More to come tomorrow and next.
