South Africa’s Zozibini Tunzi is the new Miss Universe. She was crowned early this morning in the event held in Atlanta, Georgia, and takes over the title from Catriona Gray from the Philippines. She is the first black woman from South Africa to win the title.
The 26-year old works as an activist and is particularly passionate about fighting gender-based violence. Natural beauty is also important to Tunzi and she believes that “women should love themselves the way they are”.
Tunzi excelled in all rounds of the competition. In her last question, she was given the chance to explain why she would make the best fit for Miss Universe. She said, “I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me—with my skin and kind of hair—was never considered to be beautiful. I think it is time that stops today. I want children to look at me and see my face and I want them to see their faces reflected in mine.”
Miss Mexico and Miss Peurto Rico were runners up for the crown.
