Nigerian singer and rapper Raoul John Njeng-Njeng, better known as Skales, has responded to a social media user who credited Burna Boy with reviving his career.
The controversy began when a critic labeled Skales’ career as “dead” on one of his posts, claiming it only revived thanks to Burna Boy’s involvement.
The critic pointed to the 2017 remix of Skales’ hit track Temper, which featured Burna Boy and received a Best Collaboration nomination at the 2018 Headies.
The post reads “This is the more reason why everyone hates you mf. Burnaboy was part of the people that helped your dead career.”
Skales quickly dismissed the claim, stressing that the Grammy-winning Burna Boy did not play a role in his success. The 33-year-old singer asserted that their Temper collaboration was mutually beneficial.
Taking to the microblogging platform X, Skales wrote:
“Listen I will defend myself always, I love Burna but don’t you ever say he helped me. No one helped me! Only my fans and God’s grace. We do collabo wey all of us benefit from. If the thing no benefit us, we no go dey perform for our different sets.”
This follows an earlier exchange where Skales confronted another fan who claimed that Wizkid was responsible for his rise and success in the music industry.
Skales clarified that Wizkid never contributed to his success, instead acknowledging other artists who supported his journey.
Skales began writing rap songs in 2000 and has collaborated with major artists like Akon, Banky W, and Falz. Last year, he opened up about the difficulties he encountered after leaving Empire Mates Entertainment (EME), Banky W’s record label, where he initially gained recognition.
