Tems accomplishes another milestone in career; becomes first Nigerian to win BMI Impact award

Temilade Openiyi, better known by his stage name Tems, is a Nigerian singer-songwriter who has won the BMI Impact Award in London making her the first Nigerian to do so for the first time.

The singer was honoured for her innovative artistry, original thinking, and influence on the direction of music.

Recall Tems talked openly about her life before becoming famous and how she had to steal food to get by.

Tems claimed that she and her mother had a difficult life because they went through challenging times, including one in which her mother was attacked by someone who broke into their home and held her at knifepoint. And at one point in their difficult life, she quit her job and asked her mother for permission to pursue music, which completely transformed their lives.

Tems went on to say that she will dedicate one of her hit songs, ‘Mr Rebel,’ to her mother, who is her inspiration.
