Shakira and Gerard Piqué supposedly had an open relationship before allegations of adultery led to a harsh divorce.
The former couple announced the end of their 11-year relationship in June 2022, shortly after former FC Barcelona and Spain star Pique, 36, was accused of cheating on the singer, 46.
Pique, who has already begun a new relationship with model Clara Chia Marti, then denied having an affair, claiming there was “no infidelity on his part.”
The former couple had been in a mutually approved open relationship for three years until their split, according to Spanish broadcaster José Antonio Avilés.
According to El Nacional de Catalunya, ‘there is an arrangement where “you do what you want and I do what I want,” but in the front of the media, we are still a couple,’ Avilés remarked of their purported pact.
Claims of an open relationship are thought to have come from Piqué’s intimate circle of friends and family, with many reported to be taken aback by his ex-partner’s hints to infidelity.
‘Shkira’s statement surprised the footballer’s group,’ Avilés added. ‘He was irritated to learn from the press.’
‘Piqué does not want speculation that the basis for the breakup was adultery,’ said another journalist, Pilar Vidal.
‘He was taken aback by the statement, because she is the one who takes the initiative.’
Shakira has subsequently relocated to Miami after being granted full custody of their two children, Milan and Sasha, and has been romantically linked to Formula One racer Lewis Hamilton.
