Osimhen broke Weah’s previous record (46 goals) by scoring from the penalty spot in Napoli’s 1-0 win over Fiorentina on Sunday.

After breaking the previous mark established by Cameroon star Samuel Eto’o, the Nigeria international is now the African with the most goals in a single season in the Italian top flight.

Weah, who is now Liberia’s president, congratulated the striker in a social media statement.

“Please accept my heartfelt congratulations, Victor Osimhen!” “I am delighted that you have reached a significant milestone in your football career by scoring your 47th goal in the Italian Serie A league,” Weah said on his Facebook page.

“The records show that with this goal, which you scored against Fiorentina on Sunday, May 7, 2023, you effectively become the African with the highest scoring record in the Italian Serie A league, surpassing my own account of 46 goals.”

“I am so proud of your accomplishments and congratulate you on this remarkable accomplishment, which is the result of your hard work, dedication, and tenacity.” I am especially grateful for your kind messages of congratulations on attaining such a significant milestone.”

Following his outstanding performance for Napoli this season, Osimhen has already established himself as one of the world’s top strikers.

He has piqued the curiosity of European heavyweights who want to lure him away from Napoli this summer.

Weah, on the other hand, has pushed Osimhen not to give up.

“However, I would caution you not to be satisfied. You have many more of my records to shatter. “I wish you continued success,” he concluded.

“I saw your goal against Udinese, when your 52nd-minute header gave Napoli the Scudetto. Your movement, passion, persistence, and desire brought back a lot of memories for me. I’m waiting for your 100th goal in all Italian tournaments so you may celebrate (but don’t remove your shirt like I did because you’ll get a Yellow Card)

“You have one Scudetto under your belt.” Great! When I won my first Scudetto with Milan, I said to myself, “Why not two?” With Milan, I went on to win another Scudetto. I later won the Ballon D’or. So, Victor, why not two or more? Your only limit is the sky. You can conquer the world with your dedication, perseverance, humility, and hard work. Africa requires another World Champion. Africa requires another European All-Star. Victor, you have the ability to do so.

“The records I set were not meant to be a challenge, but to inspire you and other African players.” We have the best of the best. You must maintain your humility, tenacity, and focus. Don’t get sidetracked
