If the debate over sober uniforms and tailoring has been one of the hot subjects this Paris Fashion Week, it appears that Hwang is a bit of a rule breaker. With all of the tailoring and classic-ish coats, his selection was sort of half-in, half-out. With all of the bras, black leather bustiers, and lingerie liberally sprinkled throughout, under, and upon his fall collection, it appears that he isn’t entirely sold on the concept of workplace dress codes.

As a sort of diary of Hwang’s design process, this casts a new perspective on the collection. The way he folds over waistbands, cuts shirts to keep them off one shoulder, and creates the illusion of doubled jeans reads as detailed and intricate work—sometimes overly so.

That said, ‘gestural’ fashion is becoming a bit of a buzzword (see Jonathan Anderson), and the desire to incorporate skew-whiff, falling down, glitched design into our clothes may be an indication of our strange off-kilter times.
