ROCK THE TREND: STRIPES

Following on from our recent kick flare edit we want to remind you that essentially no trend, colour or print is technically out of bounds, for any of us – it’s just about finding the right fit for YOU.  This week we’re looking at the print that will never die – stripes.  Studies claim vertical stripes make you look taller and horizontal stripes make you look wider and to some extent this is true BUT and it’s a big but, the cut and fit of the clothing item is what you need to focus on first of all – then you can start to look at the prints…  Check out our tips on how to rock stripes for your body type.

BODY TYPE – Straight

Your bust and hips will be more or less the same measurement and your waist will be only slightly smaller.

Celebrity Straights: Victoria Beckham, Toke Makinwa, Mo Cheddah and Cameron Diaz

Opt for wider stripes with varying widths to give the illusion of curves

BODY TYPE – Pear

Your hips are wider than your bust and your defined waist gradually slopes out to your hips.

Celebrity Pears: Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Joseline Dumas, Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian

As we mentioned horizontal stripes make you appear wider so go for horizontal stripes on your top half to make your torso appear broader.

BODY TYPE – Oval

Your waist is larger than your bust and hips. Your shoulders are broader than your hips and you have an ample breast size.

Celebrity Ovals: Eniola Badmus, Patience Jonathan, Gabourney Sidibe and Melissa McCartney

Avoid horizontal stripes. Vertical and horizontal stripes will be more flattering for your shape.

BODY TYPE – Apple

Your shoulders are slightly broader than your hips and you have an ample bust.  There is little definition in your waist.

Celebrity Apples: Funke Akindele, Oge Okoye, Wendy Williams and Jennifer Hudson

Vertical and diagonal stripes work best for you as they’ll elongate your torso.

BODY TYPE – Hourglass

You bust and hips are basically the same size and your waist is well defined.

Celebrity hourglasses: Stephanie Linus, Mercy Johnson Okojie, Dita Von Teese and Marilyn Monroe

You lucky guys can wear any stripe so knock yourself out when it comes to options. However, if you want to accentuate your bust and hips go for a horizontal stripe.
