Rapper, Eldee Reveals Why He Stays Away From Twitter

One can rightly say that Micro-Blogging platform, Twitter is not a social media site for the weak-hearted.

It has been over the years a platform that allows users to broadcast short posts known as tweets. The tweets can contain text, videos, pictures or links which are searchable on Twitter search.

Netizens on Twitter are wired differently as they do not interact like the regular users on Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp. Depending on how a tweet is perceived, one can trend positively or negatively.

On 4th June 2021, the Nigerian Government banned the use of Twitter in the country. This comes after Twitter deleted a tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari.

On 5th June, Telecommunication companies blocked access to Twitter after receiving a directive from the Nigerian Communications Commission to that effect.

The government however claimed the bird App was banned because Netizens were using it to spread false information that could destroy the country.

This prompted Netizens to use a virtual private network (VPN), an encrypted connection over the Internet from a device to a network to access the platform. This act made trending Nigeria topics number one in the world as VPN reported the locations of Netizens with the country overseas.

Two hundred days after its ban, NetBlocks Cost of Shutdown Tool, Nigeria’s economy lost over N104.02m ($250,600) every hour to the ban.

Eight months after the ban, on 13th January 2022, the government officially lifted the ban after it said that Twitter had met all its requirements.

Reacting to how Netizens on Twitter are wired, retired Nigerian-American rapper, Lanre Dabiri better known as Eldee noted that he doesn’t use Twitter often because the platform is allegedly filled with angry people looking for someday to ruin.

The father of two tweeted,

“Why don’t I hang out as much on Twitter? It’s toxic af out here. This place is full of angry people looking for someone’s day to ruin”.

Without mincing words, the response he received to his tweet proved him right.
