Queen Naomi in Police custody over stampede of 32 children in Ibadan

Queen Naomi Silekunola Ogunswusi, the estranged wife of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has found herself embroiled in controversy following her recent charity event.

In partnership with Agidigbo 88.7 FM, Ibadan, owned by Oriyomi Hamzat, Prophetess Naomi organized a feeding program for the less privileged on Wednesday, December 18th. Tragically, the event turned disastrous when a stampede broke out, leading to the death of over 32 children.

According to reports making rounds on social media, the tragic event took place at Islamic High School Basorun, where it was organized to cater to families. The disaster occurred when participants rushed to gain entry, leading to a deadly stampede.

Eyewitnesses revealed that provisions had been made for 5,000 children, but over 7,500 reportedly showed up, overwhelming the event organizers.

Sympathizing with the victims’ families, the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde assured the public that measures had been taken to prevent further casualties and provide support to those affected.

“We have taken steps to ensure no further deaths are recorded at this venue by deploying security agents to restore order at the venue. We also deployed medical personnel and ambulances to the venue. The event has been stopped, and attendees have been escorted out of the venue. We are taking all realistic measures to ensure that the venue is secured.

The Governor further assured that everyone involved in the incident would be held accountable.

“I want to reassure our people that anyone directly or remotely involved in this disaster will be held accountable. Please remain calm as the security agencies investigate this unfortunate incident.”

Meanwhile, Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adewale Osifeso confirmed that an investigation into the incident has commenced.

He also noted that Prophetess Naomi is in custody assisting in the investigation.

According to the PPRO, Prophetess Naomi was “invited and she honoured the Invitation. She is assisting with the ongoing Investigation”.
