This follows the Queen’s participation in a beacon lighting ceremony on Thursday evening, as part of her 70th year on the throne.

The 96-year-old monarch appeared twice on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, flanked by other senior royals, as they watched a military parade and waved to thousands of well-wishers on The Mall.

After experiencing discomfort, Queen Elizabeth withdraws from the Jubilee thanksgiving service.

The palace confirmed she would not attend Friday’s thanksgiving service hours after the ceremony, but she “would like to thank all those who made today such a memorable occasion.”

According to the palace, the decision was made with “great reluctance” after considering the “journey and activity required.”

The Queen is scheduled to attend the Epsom Derby on Saturday as part of her Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

The service at St Paul’s Cathedral in central London will thank the Queen for her seven decades as monarch.
