On Monday, January 9, the Pope addressed the diplomatic corps in the Vatican, saying that conflicts like the one in Ukraine, with its “wake of death and destruction” and “attacks on civil infrastructures,” are crimes “against God and humanity.”

“Today, I feel compelled to renew my call for an immediate end to this senseless conflict, the consequences of which are felt in entire regions, including outside of Europe, due to repercussions in the areas of energy and food production, particularly in Africa and the Middle East,” he said.

He also emphasized the war in Ukraine’s impact on the “most vulnerable – children, the elderly, the disabled,” saying it “leaves an indelible mark on families.”
