Nigerian artist Lekan Osifeso Jr., known widely by his stage name Lojay, has been trending since the release of his “Gangster Romantic’’ sophomore album. Lojay’s title for the album stems from his personal experiences on the streets of Lagos.

In a recent interview, the singer noted that he found out that there was no place for pity on his way to stardom, so he had to put up the gangster attitude to make it to the top. Lojay disclosed he had to channel all his experiences into making his album successful.

He said:

“When I was creating the project, it was coming from a place of just having been through stuff in Nigeria, just being through streets of Lagos, especially with everything that’s happened in the last 12, 18 months, and I just wanted to express that.’’

Lojay further said he had to do away with being romantic and focus on the tough parts of things because he had to succeed.

“In that time I’ve seen “shege,” and for me to survive the “shege” I’ve understood that I just can’t be a romantic. In order to survive I need to toughen up in these streets and be a gangster a bit. This project is an expression of that, it’s an expression of everything that’s happened in the last 12, 18 months and it’s an expression of where I’m at right now, emotionally.”

The singer hit the spotlight after collaborating with high-profile music producer Sarz on his hit track “Monalisa.”

Monalisa was a huge success as it peaked at various music charts across the globe. Particularly, the song, which features Chris Brown and Sarz, peaked at number 8 on the US Billboard chart.
