In fashion terms, the Oscars red carpet exerts primordial power over the awards season. No matter how many custom Valentino Couture gowns, how many hundreds of carats of baguette diamonds your stylist has pulled in for the preceding ceremonies – this is the one that counts.
It’s a tricky brief. Against a generally male, pale backdrop of self-aggrandisement, zeal and zest are encouraged on the clothing front. But experimentation on the Oscars red carpet can so easily backfire, much as an attempt at tasteful elegance can so easily translate as snoozy.
This year’s nominees, however, are an assertive bunch that promise good carpet. As they descend on the Dolby Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard for the Oscars 2020, all eyes are on the Best Actress nominees, many of whom are no stranger to the Academy Awards step-and-repeat.
