ONI GELE

 

Gele is a Yoruba head wrap which  has polarized all head gears. Igbo head gears and now called Gele also but this is a misconception. The Igbo headgear is called Ichafu.

 

Gele’s originated since 18th century among the Yorubas in Lagos. They come in different shapes and sizes, and are tied with various fabrics (materials); Damask and Aso oke being the most common.

 

The Gele which originated as a symbol of wealth among Yoruba women is a staple for parties, naming ceremonies and other social engagements. It is tied to different angles and different ways. Just a search on Youtube ‘How to tie Gele’ brings hundreds of results.
