Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Omoni Oboli has shared an insight into the marriage of her eldest son, Tobe and his wife, Marelle Bergsma.
In an interview on Dear Ife podcast with Ifedayo Agoro, Omoni disclosed that she respects her son’s marriage and shared the approach she uses.
The mother of three shared that she empathizes with her daughter-in-law by imagining herself in her shoes rather than focusing solely on her own perspective.
Reflecting on her own life, she recalled marrying at 21—the same age as her daughter-in-law—and acknowledged her own strong-willed nature at that age. Recognizing this, she understands her daughter-in-law’s likely desire for independence.
The veteran actress also highlighted the importance of sons being able to communicate openly with their mothers on behalf of their wives, fostering healthy family boundaries and mutual respect.
“There’s been a few times when my son has come to meet me to say, ‘Mum, Marelle does not like that’ and I have to catch myself back and say ‘Oh, I didn’t mean it that way.’ And it’s okay. So, the fact that your child cannot come to you to say ‘my wife doesn’t like this’, that’s a problem in itself.
“I think, first things first, people need to understand and realise that this is now another family. Yes, they are still a part of your family but they now have their own family.”
Glamsquad recalls that Omoni shared the news of her son’s marital journey social media.
Tobe, 22 and Marelle, 21, tied the knot in March in Canada welcomed their first child, Naya in August.
Omoni who has been yearning for a granddaughter joyfully expressed immense happiness over what she described as a perfect gift from God.
