NOLLYWOOD LACKS GOOD COMEDY SCRIPTS – CHARLES INOJIE

Nollywood actor and director, Charles Inojie has restated the importance of comedy in the Nigerian movie industry, saying that it is an aspect of the industry that can never be pushed aside.

Inojie said that if comedy was well told with a story and handled seriously, it would sell. “Once a movie has a good story, people will embrace it,” he said. He explained that what usually happened in Nigeria were that once a bakery made wheat bread and it sold, others would abandon what they were known for and focused on wheat bread. “I think that is happening to comedy too. The problem we have is that people like to treat comedy as trash. ‘The Johnsons’ is a comedy series and I would be surprised if it is not on the list of top five comedy series in Nigeria. We treat is as serious business,” he added.
He, however, lamented that there were no good scripts in the industry like it used to be, adding that most comedians did not see need to improve themselves.
Inojie said, “Sometimes, what we do is to get three comic actors and throw them on the streets to abuse their elders all in the name of acting. You think it will make anyone happy in a society like ours? That you are a popular comic actor does not mean people will laugh at whatever you say. So, I think comic scripts should be properly written and all the ingredients that make up a good script should be there.”
Inojie hates flat characters in comedy scripts. This, perhaps, explains why when he gets a script, what he looks for is a character that is constantly motivated by action and inaction in the world around him.
Speaking on the difference between acting and directing, he said there was no way a director’s work could be compared with acting. According to him, the director determines the destiny of a piece of drama until it assumes life.
“The director carries the burden of the entire nation on his shoulder. So, the director’s job cannot be anywhere near easy. But for me, acting comes naturally. I feel like I am having fun when I am acting. To that extent, I would say acting is easier than directing.”
