The Ginger singer revealed this in a recent edition of Quincy Jonze’s audiovisual podcast, Echo Room.
According to him, his association with Starboy Record was not a recording contract.
L.A.X revealed that his father funded his musical ventures, and then his label boss, Wizkid, directed the monies to the appropriate marketing channels.
“When I took the Wiz’s contract to him, my dad didn’t like all those signing things,” he explained. He always feels that if you sign, you sign your life. And when it comes to business decisions, I always consult with him first. So I went to see him and told him, “Daddy, this is a contract, Wiz wants to sign me.” And he was like, “Why don’t we do [a] partnership?”
“He was like, a partnership will benefit both you and him [Wizkid].” Once you’ve partnered on that level, you’re free to go your separate ways. So that’s exactly what we did.”
“The thing about music is that bag [funds] is important,” he continued. This is the truth; my popsy [father] always gives me bags. But Wiz does one thing consistently: he spends the bags.”
L.A.X also stated that Toyin Lawani was the one who introduced him to Wizkid by playing his songs for him.
