MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKERS – GOOD OR BAD

I wrote this in response to a friend who said motivational speakers where leading people astray by telling them to follow their dreams instead of working to put food on the table and pay bills. Below are my thoughts on that. They are just a few of my thoughts.

Those motivational speakers are not to blame for that. The advice to pursue your passion is not an advice not to work. Working is mandatory the advice is not to neglect that which you dream about so that you would not get fulfilled. In US they have College soccer, basketball etc . A lot of Olympic Athletes that win medals are students or work part time somewhere to put food on the table and pay the bills. The advice is that there is 24 hours given to everybody daily and how we balance it is our biggest asset.

It is good to read motivational books but balance it with real life. The books I find motivational are stories of great achievers that started with nothing. You will find a lot of inspiration in that. Of course they have to work. Although Puff Daddy quit university he did that to work with Def jam as an intern and later I think Arista record and after some years he could form bad boy under that label. I found out that Irv Gotti CEO of record label murder Inc, the label that discovered and produced artists like Ja Rule and Ashanti in the past first worked as a Dj before he got work as a low level A and R for Def Jam. Dj Khaled used to sleep on the floor of a local radio station. Those you might say worked around their passions.

But Rick Ross worked for almost two years as a correctional officer (Prison Warder). He must have hated his job, but he had been rapping way before then and I guess he used his job as a means to raise money to get his Demos together and pursue his music career. There are big time Celebrities in music and movie industries today that had odd jobs coming up. Jim Carey was a janitor who used to clean toilets. There is a popular singer I cant remember his name right now that used to serve in a fast food restaurant like Burger King.

It’s people that misinterpret these motivational speakers who some they have gone through such. Brian Tracey was a brick layer before he became and insurance salesman. The reason behind the motivational sermon is how to turn the tide around. How not to live your whole life doing something you hate. Like Rick Ross could have still been a prison warder till date and retire a prison warder when he is old and end pension which wont be bad at all for a person who doesnt have the ambition to rock stages as a rap star.

It is only lazy people who hide behind a dream or a talent and refuse to “hustle” as we would popularly call it. I realized that the hustle is open for all. In fact the fact that you have a dream in the first place should make you work harder than your contemporaries.
