Monique Lhuillier Spring 2016 Shoe Collection

Expect the unexpected from Monique Lhuillier. For next spring, the designer was drawn to the fine arts, both on canvas and out in the world.

“Ellsworth Kelly was a big inspiration. The collection is bright and bold, with color-block styles and abstract floral patterns,” she said.

“It also contains unexpected design elements, including Lucite, saturated leather, prints, matte and shine. I want women to be able to incorporate a sense of playfulness into their style.”

She wasn’t afraid to take chances with color to add vibrance to the line, either.

“I was able to introduce more daytime styles into this collection, along with modern graphic prints and embellishments,” said Lhuillier, who debuted footwear for spring ’13.

“There is a certain harmony that can come from color, texture and depth when they are combined in specific ways.  I am always inspired by color, but this season was about using it more explicitly; taking advantage of pattern and trim with the palette to bring definition to the shoe.  The elements are all very bold in order to evoke a sense of playfulness and whimsy,” she continued. “[The shoes] are artful and edgy, while remaining whimsical and feminine.”

The designer tapped new materials, too. “[This season] is my first using matte rubberized leather, which feels very modern and sleek.”
